How did you discover VoluntEars?

Deaf Club.

Why did you join VoluntEars?

To meet new people and learn something new.

Why did you choose the Peru trip?

I’d never been to that part of the world before.

What were you looking forward to?

The itinerary was brilliant and I was excited to meet the group.

Were you worried about anything before the trip?

No – I trust Richard! [VoluntEars Director].

What words would you use to describe your experience in Peru?

Magical, deaf-friendly, full of laughter.

What was your funniest or most memorable experience?

Lake Titicaca was spectacular, so was Machu Picchu and of course teaming up with Malcolm to pull off some pranks!

What did you enjoy the most on the trip?

I loved the diversity of the group and the opportunity to use and experience BSL, ASL and tactile signing as well as learning a bit of Peruvian Sign Language and a bit of Spanish! A dream come true for a wannabe interpreter!

How do you think you benefitted from the experience?

On a personal level, it’s been wonderful to experience South America and see one of the Wonders of the World and meet some friends for life. It’s also been an invaluable experience for my career, to experience travelling with deaf people, learn more about interpreting in challenging environments.

What did you like about the VoluntEars trip?

Everything – Richard has done it again with another spectacular trip! Paola’s (VoluntEars Peru staff) insights and support was fantastic too. It was a great experience to visit the deaf children at the school and also get to experience Peru!

Would you join another VoluntEars trip?

Yes.
