How did you discover VoluntEars?
We went to Sri Lanka last summer with VoluntEars.
Why did you join VoluntEars?
We love how well organised and well researched VoluntEars trips are.
Why did you choose the Montenegro trip?
Since going to Sri Lanka last summer I’ve wanted to do another VoluntEars trip. There was a post on VoluntEars Facebook page 3 weeks before the Montenegro trip saying there were 2 places left. It was fate! Matthew and I signed up!
What were you looking forward to?
Going somewhere we’ve never been before. Meeting other VoluntEars and visiting a deaf school in another country. Having been in a trip before I was looking forward to someone else being in charge of all the arrangements. Richard [VoluntEars Director] does such a fantastic job. He takes everything in his stride and he plans really good trips with a good balance of tourism and activities.
What words would you use to describe your experience in Montenegro?
Stunning scenery, good company, fun activities, good food, inclusive.
What was your funniest or most memorable experience?
A stray cat jumping into Leyla’s lap and falling asleep for 15 minutes. Then us pushing the wheelchair with the cat still sleeping.
What did you enjoy the most on the trip?
Driving the speed boat and working with the deaf school children.
How do you think you benefitted from the experience?
Made new friends, learned a new sign language and pushed us both to do more signing.
What did you like about the VoluntEars trip?
Spending time with other deaf people. The school. The speed boat. The views from Mount Lovcen. Sunset from the fortress above Kotor. The view in the morning from our balcony. En-suites. The walk along the shore road for breakfast at the nearby hotel. Richard and Mel [Communicator].
How could we make the trip better in the future?
The apartments were lovely but it would have been nice to have had a communal space where we could meet in the evenings. Having said that we were always very tired by the time we got back to the apartments after a full day.
