About Montenegro
The land of the Black Mountain – Montenegro – is still relatively unknown. It’s the land of heroes and pirates that drove the Turks out of the mountains and raided Venetian ships in the middle ages.
Located on the Adriatic Sea, Montenegro is a Balkan country with a narrow strip of 300km of beaches along its Adriatic coastline, rugged mountains, glacial lakes, limestone peaks and medieval villages.
In the Bay of Kotor, where VoluntEars trips are run, the scenery resembles a fjord. It’s dotted with ancient fortified towns such as Kotor and Herceg Novi and coastal churches.
Only a 3 hour flight from the UK, with 1 hour time difference, Montenegro makes a great destination for a short trip.
Our 4 day trip includes helping at a local deaf school in Kotor, a boat trip to Gospa od Škrpjela, a visit to Mount Lovćen, and time off to wander around Kotor’s old town with it’s winding cobbled streets and many cafes and shops.
Our trips run in April and October when the weather is normally warm, sunny and dry.

Stari Grad (Old Town)
The old town is fully pedestrianised and accessed through 3 main gates, dating back to the 13th Century.
You will find cobbled streets leading off in every direction with shops, cafes and restaurants in cute squares overlooked by the mountains behind.
Speed boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks
Leave the city and speed across the blue waters of Kotor Bay to Gospa od Skrpjela, or Our Lady of the Rocks.
Built in 1452, the island was formed by local fishermen and sailors throwing stones into the sea and sinking boats until they piled up high enough to build on top of.
Mount Lovćen
Lovćen is a mountain which inspires the name “Montenegro” meaning Black Mountain, which refers to the appearance of Mount Lovćen when it was covered in dense forests.
It takes around 1 hour to drive there from Kotor and you’ll be amazed how fast you are surrounded by mountains after leaving the coast. And what a wonderful view!
Kotor Fortress
Walk up the 1,350 steps to Kotor Fortress and get a breathtaking view over the old city and Kotor Bay. Start late afternoon and see the sun setting behind the hills and watch the lights com on in the old town. Then walk down for a well-deserved dinner.
Pre-trip meeting
Meet other volunteers and our staff before your trip.
We arrange a video call for the whole group so people can attend no matter where they live. If you’re not available at the time then we’ll send you a recording of the call – audio and BSL.
