How did you discover VoluntEars?
Friends loved it.
Why did you join VoluntEars?
I wanted to spend more time with the deaf UK community, but also I love group trips so it was a great combination of the two things! Adventure and BSL!
Why did you choose the Ghana trip?
I have actually been to the other countries you offered and Ghana was the only place I hadn’t been! I figured that I probably wouldn’t prioritise going to Ghana on my summer holidays and so it was a great chance to go somewhere in a group that I might not otherwise go to.
What were you looking forward to?
Spending time with deaf people and exploring a new country
Were you worried about anything before the trip?
The children! The teaching!
What words would you use to describe your experience in Ghana?
Authentic! I loved that we spent time with host families and Enoch and his family [Enoch works for VoluntEars in Ghana]. It meant that I could really ask the questions I wanted to ask and get to understand a bit about the country in a way I maybe wouldn’t have done if travelling independently.
What was your funniest or most memorable experience?
Gaea generally! I really loved all the people on the trip. I loved that Richard [VoluntEars director] gets really tickled by things and laughs a lot.
What did you enjoy the most on the trip?
I actually enjoyed the opportunities to immerse myself in water!
I really liked the structure and balance of the downtime.
I like that all costs were included and there were no hidden surprises of having to pay for entrance tickets etc.
How do you think you benefitted from the experience?
I challenged myself with the children! This is not a skill set of mine – being with kids, and it’s the part I struggled with the most.
What did you like about the VoluntEars trip?
I really liked Richard [VoluntEars director] and his organisational skills – his care and level of pre-organisation was really apparent.
I liked that the meals were in the home so you could be sure of hygiene, so we didn’t need to worry about veggie options, also it was nice to pop back to house for downtime between activities.
It didn’t feel rushed at all, which was really unexpected – usually on a group holiday you are rushing around and exhausted. I liked that the first day was a bit of a free day, I thought that was thoughtful.
Would you join another VoluntEars trip?
Yes
What countries would you like to visit in the future?
I would do them all! Group holidays take all the stress out of a trip and plus you have ready made friends. So I would do them all!!
