How did you discover VoluntEars?

I discovered VoluntEars online. At the time, I had recently lost the rest of my ability to hear and I was desperately searching for a way to continue traveling and volunteering while not letting my deafness limit me in any way.

Why did you join VoluntEars?

I joined VoluntEars because it changed the way I saw myself and how I saw others. It continues to empower and inspire me! This is one of the best and most organized travel organizations I ever experienced. The people involved are a big part of my life, even across such a great distance [Anna lives in the USA]. I feel very close to them, we stay in touch and continue to learn and grow together. We find ways to make the world a better place for those who may not be “heard” or seen.

Why did you choose the Ghana trip?

I chose the Ghana trip because I have been wanting to see Ghana for years now, since before I even knew I would become deaf. I had never set foot on the continent of Africa, and I had many college friends from this beautiful place. I first went to Sri Lanka with VoluntEars and absolutely loved it – it went beyond my expectations, so I felt very comfortable planning another trip with them.

Before I was nervous about going to Ghana alone, but people in VoluntEars really take care of you, as if they’re family. I completely trust them and I felt safe the whole time I was there. We were encouraged to share any small problem that came up. I never had to worry. And at the same time we had the freedom to get to know the local people and taste the authentic culture there, as we did in Sri Lanka!

People were accommodating, I didn’t feel bad about not hearing them, I actually felt more proactive while with this supportive VoluntEars group and the Director, Richard Clowes, who always goes above and beyond!

What were you looking forward to?

I was looking forward to meeting the people, tasting the foods, learning about the deaf community there and their sign language, learning their music (drumming!!) and dancing (I GOT TO DANCE SO MUCH!!! I LOVED IT). I even felt like I was more connected to nature there. I was looking forward to learning more ways to embrace my deafness and to be able to feel useful in helping others, not always having to depend on others. And all my hopes were met.

Were you worried about anything before the trip?

Yes. But the worries didn’t last. The sun was hot and bright. My body learned to sweat in ways and places I didn’t think were possible (my knees and elbows sweated too!!). The people were kind and giving more than any culture I’ve experienced – it seemed expected that people trust each other with belongings, etc. I thought insects would bother me but I adapted quickly and taking bucket showers became very enjoyable and refreshing; not difficult as I thought.

What words would you use to describe your experience in Ghana?

Words to describe Ghana: Deliberate kind bold people. Passionate. Exciting. Beads and Music. Colorful nature all around. Never Boring (even if you’re sleep deprived). Lots of eye contact and people always willing to help.

What was your funniest or most memorable experience ?

The last night at the restaurant!!!!!

What did you enjoy the most on the trip?

The people. The people are why I travel. No one is the same. It’s so important to learn the different ways of kindness and different mindsets people have. They can add to your resources and tools in dealing with life. In Ghana people easily smile, and their smiles were always so beautiful. I loved dancing with the people and watching the talented students perform their dance too.

How do you think you benefitted from the experience?

I feel more confident. I really needed this. My communication has already improved and helped my relationships here at home, because I can respect myself more. I’m also appreciating running water and laundry machines and even work more. Yes, I’m enjoying work more. It’s as if this VoluntEars trip has reminded me again of the meaning of life. And work doesn’t have to be a chore!

What did you like about the VoluntEars trip?

The support and connections with everyone. Feeling taken care of but also having options to go my own way. I never felt alone.

How could we make the trip better in the future?

The last trip I had suggested an ASL interpreter, but this time I was super lucky. Ghanaian Sign Language is very close to American Sign Language, and since we had Ghanaian Sign Language interpreters working with us, I could communicate more directly! But Richard [VoluntEars Director] was always there to repeat things for me into my cochlear implant, so I was never excluded. I don’t see a way to improve, I just want more trips please! Maybe in Argentina or Brazil! 😀
