How did you discover VoluntEars?

Been on previous trips.

Why did you join VoluntEars?

Good way to extend my network of deaf people, work in beautiful places and feel like I’m giving back to the wider community.

Why did you choose the Everest Base Camp trip?

I liked the idea of the physical challenge.

What were you looking forward to?

Meeting the volunteers and getting to EBC.

Were you worried about anything before the trip?

Being the interpreter I felt slightly more pressure on not being able to give up if I faced altitude issues, especially combined with my asthma.

What words would you use to describe your experience in Nepal?

Magical.

What was your funniest or most memorable experience ?

World’s highest tattoo shop in the dark. Lots of shared memories in the group.

What did you enjoy the most on the trip?

The way the group got on with each other. Everyone was really supportive of everyone else, and the group feel was great to be a part of.

Was it different to what you expected in any way? Please describe.

EBC was very different to what I thought it would be. I was also surprised with the quality of the teahouses [accommodation], the ones higher up were definitely better than I imagined they would be.

How do you think you benefitted from the experience?

New friends, bragging rights, fresh outlook on life.

What did you like about the VoluntEars trip?

Feeling safe the whole time, knowing that things are organised.
