Why did you join a VoluntEars trip?

“I’ve always loved volunteering and working with D/deaf people and D/deaf children especially. I thought it was a really exciting opportunity to be part of it.”

What were you most looking forward to?

“I was really excited to meet the volunteers and learn things from them and to experience Sri Lanka as a group.”

What have you learnt?

“Lots of things! I’ve learnt how to communicate with people in a different culture, how to eat with my right hand, working with the local people and experiencing a different way of living.”

Would you recommend these trips to D/deaf people?

“Definitely, it’s perfect. My Mum’s profoundly deaf and I know that back at home there aren’t many volunteering opportunities for D/deaf people. Here there’s a mixture of hearing and D/deaf people, there’s always a Communicator to help and staff from VoluntEars in case you have any worries or problems. It’s really supportive and I think D/deaf people will be excited to join.”
