How did you discover VoluntEars?

My ex-students and nephew – they all went to Nepal, Morocco and Sri Lanka with VoluntEars. They all told me about their wonderful experiences.

Why did you join VoluntEars?

I joined the VoluntEars when my ex-students and nephew went to their trips. Hence it made me wanting to gain some first-hand experience! So I booked for Nepal and also it is my first visit to Asia countries.

Why did you choose the Nepal trip?

I would like to taste the Nepalese’s cultures – food, people and places. I also enjoyed trekking in my past time. Nepal is one of the countries that I would love to see. It is my gut feeling that I should go before my knees are going!

What were you looking forward to?

Meeting the Nepalese people, food and cultures (Hindu and Buddha). I also would like to see if my help to support the deaf school in Pokhara would be very handy.

What words would you use to describe your experience in Nepal?

Awesome and wonderful experience and this is what I had hoped for. Seeing the country for the first time.

What was your funniest or most memorable experience?

On my first day going to bus station, I did a fall and scratched on my knee. To my embarrassment that the young people from the VoluntEars came to the aid! My most memorable experience is that I saw the sun rise on Annapurna (Mountain Range) twice on the same morning! It was awesome.

My funniest experience that the Americans on our trip have never heard of Christmas Baubles and they can’t pronounce!

What did you enjoy the most on the trip?

Helping the deaf school in Pokhara made me feeling great. The deaf children and staff are pleased with our work.

Going on the trek to Poon Hill was best every I have done. I have been to some mountains before but this was the best.

Visit two temples in Kathmandu – Boudhanath Stupa and Swayambhunath. They both are worth to visit on my first experience of tasting the cultures (Hindu and Buddha). I have been lucky to meet some Buddhist monks.

How do you think you benefitted from the experience?

I can share my experience with some of deaf children in schools and my friends. I can tell them about their cultures and languages. It is interesting to see that two religious (Hindu and Buddha) are working together for the communities in Nepal.

What did you like about the VoluntEars trip?

Meeting other volunteers and their experience. We can share our experience with each other. I enjoyed doing some voluntary work in school, teaching deaf children and done some trekking up the Poon Hill. Most of the volunteers are able to used sign languages and it helps with communication with each other, to share. I was fortunate to have some volunteers that could sign well.
