What did VoluntEars do well?

Organisation. Organising fantastic porters for the trek, great restaurants and foods to try, decent hotels. Warm and respectful relationship with the school. Information giving. Interest in clients. VoluntEars (Richard) is probably like a swan….gracefully gliding across the pond whilst paddling fast (which is the bit no one sees).

What did you like about the VoluntEars programme?

I loved that there was a mix of Deaf and hearing VoluntEars. Richard has the patience of a saint! He is very positive and calming, he took an interest in everyone. Even though I was expecting to do more renovation (even though we had the itinerary!) I was 100% happy with how the programme was organised and delivered.

What did you learn?

I learnt to stand back with my son and trust that he will and can do the right thing. I learnt to sign a bit more. I learnt that the Nepalese people are kind and tolerant. There is no hurry and that was particularly refreshing!

How do you think you benefitted from the experience?

I benefited from being able to watch my teenage son instead of being ‘in it’ all the time. I saw how capable he was (trekking and renovation). Having the opportunity to be with Deaf VoluntEars, improve my BSL and see my deaf oral son sign and navigate the streets.
