Itinerary
Day 1 - Sunday
Arrive in India!
We will meet you at Kochi international airport and drive you to our accommodation, about 1 hour away. You can unpack, meet the other volunteers and relax.
We’ll have a walk around your new neighbourhood this afternoon / evening to help you adjust to your new surroundings and go for dinner at a local restaurant – your first chance to experience freshly cooked Keralan food. You’re in India 🙂

Day 2 - Monday
We’ll have a late breakfast and do an orientation meeting so you know exactly what to expect over the next 2 weeks.
This afternoon we’ll explore some of Kochi harbour – see the famous Chinese fishing nets, get involved with local life when we take the “ro-ro” ferry across the harbour and wander along the waterfront as the sun goes down.

Day 3 - Tuesday
This morning we’ll learn about some local history by visiting Mattancherry Palace and Jew Street.

This afternoon we’ll visit a local deaf school and do activities with some of their students. We’ll discuss the plans for this in advance, we can give you ideas for activities and you can work in groups with other volunteers so don’t worry if it’s a bit out of your comfort zone. The students will be super-excited to meet you!

Day 4 - Wednesday
A slightly early start today as we travel an hour away (by private mini-bus) to visit Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, a significant local Hindu temple.

This afternoon we’ll do activities at the deaf school back in Kochi. Teach some dance moves, play cards, try your hand at henna tattoos…the options are endless!

Day 5 - Thursday
This morning we’ll visit one of Kochi’s best known Dobhi’s – a huge traditional outdoor laundry service – and browse the David Hall Art Gallery (where they also serve very tasty cakes and coffees!).
This afternoon is our last session with the students at the deaf school.

Day 6 - Friday
Today we leave Kochi and the coast behind and travel up to the ‘hill country’ in the Western Ghat mountains. We’ll stay in Munnar tonight; admire the far-reaching views and see hillsides covered in bright green-coloured tea plantations.

Day 7 - Saturday
After breakfast with a view we’ll visit a working tea factory where you can see freshly-plucked tea leaves being transformed into drinkable tea and then well drive further through the mountains to Thekkady ready for our next adventure tomorrow.

Day 8 - Sunday
Today starts with a boat trip on the beautiful lake at Periyar National Park. See if you can spot wild elephants as they venture down to the lake shores for a wander in the morning sunshine.
After lunch in the hills we’ll drive back to Kochi.

Day 9 - Monday
This morning is planned as a relaxing time after yesterday’s drive back to Kochi so you can decide what to do! We are on hand to give advice if it’s helpful.
This afternoon we’ll visit a spice warehouse and then go for dinner.

Day 10 - Tuesday
Today’s a bit different – after breakfast we’ll travel to the other side of Kochi harbour by water-taxi and do some workshops with a Deaf Women’s foundation.

After lunch we’ll visit Cherai beach – it’s a beautiful long white sandy beach where you can wander with your feet in the warm Indian Ocean water and swim in a hotel pool looking out over a lagoon. Not a bad way to finish the day!

Day 11 - Wednesday
Our second morning working with the ladies at the Deaf Women’s foundation in Ernakulem.

After lunch together, you’re free to explore the city before we head home for dinner.

Day 12 - Thursday
After breakfast, you decide how to spend the morning! By now you’ll know Kochi quite well and will definitely have places you want to revisit or explore for the next few hours before meeting for lunch.
This afternoon we’ll watch a traditional Kathakali dancing show and before it starts VoluntEars will arrange for you to meet a deaf make-up artist who helps the performers prepare every day.

Day 13 - Friday
We finish our India trip with one of the most relaxing things to do in Kerala – a boat trip on the backwaters on a traditional wooden boat. You’ll have chance to disembark and meet the local backwater communities. Lunch will be served on a banana leaf and eaten by hand!

Day 14 - Saturday
Time for a final Indian breakfast before packing up and then we’ll take you to Kochi airport for your flight back home.
What an amazing trip you will have had in this wonderful country!
